Description

18K GOLD PRESENTATION POCKET WATCH GIVEN TO AN AMERICAN CAPTAIN BY THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. Beautifully engraved on the back of the case "Presented by the/Government of Canada/to Captain Osborne Master of the/American Barque C. E. Jayne of/New York/in recognition of his/gallant exertions in the/rescue of the survivors/of the wrecked Ship/N. W. Blethen of Yarmouth/Nova Scotia/on the 2nd August 1876". Two inch diameter white porcelain face with Roman numerals and blued steel hour, minute and second hands. Key wind. Inside of the gold covers fully hallmarked with maker mark "HDG", "A 18", leopard head, a crown and serial number "4437".  The chronometer style works with a fancy balance wheel and signed in script "John Leslie London". Movement protected by a removable dust cover. Condition of everything fine. The N. W. Blethen sailed out of Baltimore on July 25, 1876 for London. On the 30th she encountered a gale and violent seas that ultimately washed all hands overboard. All on board, 21 in number, except the second mate and 3 seamen were drowned. The Captain, his wife and two children were among those lost. Will supply copies of the second mate's account of the tragedy.
