Revenue Cutter Sword & Ames Co. Trade Card
Description

NEW REGULATION REVENUE CUTTER SERVICE SWORD...CIRCA 1870. Straight, double edged, blade 29" l. and beautifully etched both sides with floral, scroll, Treasury Seal and rope motifs. One side with old english letters "U.S.R.M.". Top of blade with an American Eagle on one side and maker's name on reverse "Ames Mfg Co/Chicopee/ Mass". All gilt brass hilt with fish skin grips wrapped with twisted wire. Cross guard with scroll designs at each end and in center letters "USRM". Large counter guard with spread wing American Eagle in high relief. Smaller counter guard on reverse side. Rounded pommel with four leaves in relief. Overall length 36". Black leather scabbard with three mounts. The top mount with Treasury Seal and a shell motif frog stud. Middle mount engraved with a large fouled anchor. Condition overall very fine. This model Revenue sword made by a few different makers but Ames version considered to be the nicest looking example. Also included is an original "AMES SWORD COMPANY" trade card that is printed both sides on very heavy paper. The card states all the company information and a list of goods they offer. 3" h. x 5 1/4" w. Condition fine.
